Taxes/tribute Taxes/tribute

Paying taxes is a biblical command, affirmed by Jesus and the Apostle Paul, recognizing governmental authority. Examples throughout Scripture illustrate this principle, while also showing instances where exceptions were made.

Lord is not partial

For the Lord your God is God of gods and Lord of lords, the great God, mighty and awesome, who shows no partiality nor takes a bribe. (Deuteronomy 10:17)
Therefore let the fear of the Lord be upon you; take care, and do it, for there is no iniquity with the Lord our God, no partiality, nor taking of bribes. (2 Chronicles 19:7)
How much less to Him who does not respect the persons of princes, Nor regards the rich more than the poor; For they are all the work of His hands. (Job 34:19)
And you, masters, do the same things to them, forbearing threatening, knowing that your own Master also is in heaven, and there is no partiality with Him. (Ephesians 6:9)

We are not to be partial

To show partiality is not good, Because for a piece of bread a man will transgress. (Proverbs 28:21)

It is sin to be partial

If you really fulfill the royal law according to the Scripture, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself,” you do well. But if you show partiality, you commit sin, and are convicted by the law as transgressors. (James 2:8-9)

Do not be partial to the rich

My brethren, do not hold the faith of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Lord of glory, with partiality. For if there should come into your assembly a man with gold rings, in fine apparel, and there should also come in a poor man in filthy clothes, and you pay attention to the one wearing the fine clothes and say to him, “You sit here in a good place,” and say to the poor man, “You stand there,” or, “Sit here at my footstool,” have you not shown partiality among yourselves, and become judges with evil thoughts? Listen, my beloved brethren: Has God not chosen the poor of this world to be rich in faith and heirs of the kingdom which He promised to those who love Him? But you have dishonored the poor man. Do not the rich oppress you and drag you into the courts? Do they not blaspheme that noble name by which you are called? If you really fulfill the royal law according to the Scripture, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself,” you do well; but if you show partiality, you commit sin, and are convicted by the law as transgressors. (James 2:1-9)

Do not be partial to the poor

Neither shalt thou countenance a poor man in his cause. (Exodus 23:3)
Ye shall do no unrighteousness in judgment: thou shalt not respect the person of the poor, nor honour the person of the mighty: but in righteousness shalt thou judge thy neighbour. (Leviticus 19:15)

Leaders/judges are not to be partial

You shall not show partiality in judgment; you shall hear the small as well as the great; you shall not be afraid of anyone, for the judgment is God’s. And the case that is too hard for you, you shall bring to me, and I will hear it. (Deuteronomy 1:17)
You shall appoint judges and officers in all your gates, which the Lord your and they shall judge the people with just judgment. You shall not pervert justice; you shall not show partiality, nor take a bribe, for a bribe blinds the eyes of the wise and subverts the words of the righteous. (Deuteronomy 16:18-19)
And he said to the judges, “Take heed to what you are doing, for you do not judge for man but for the Lord, who is with you in the judgment. Now therefore, let the fear of the Lord be upon you; take care, and do it, for there is no iniquity with the Lord our God, no partiality, nor taking of bribes.” (2 Chronicles 19:6-7)

Cursed if partial

Therefore I also have made you despised and base before all the people, because you have not kept My ways but have shown partiality in the law. (Malachi 2:9)

Correct attitudes

Be of the same mind towards one another

Be of the same mind toward one another. Do not set your mind on high things, but associate with the humble. Do not be wise in your own opinion. (Romans 12:16)

Consider others more important than yourself

Let nothing be done through selfish ambition or conceit, but in lowliness of mind let each esteem others better than himself. (Philippians 2:3)
